Typographical typography -Photographer Ian Rotherham

May 12th June 1st
Ian is a well respected UCOL Tutor, and all round great guy. His  exhibition is made up of 30 framed photographs (40cm x 50cm vertical)
The images were shot as an artistic output from a combined research project with two other lecturers. The research investigates if there is regional style/differences in active typography, which is typography that is used currently to promote the business.
The research sampled 42 different town and cities within the North Island and the images were taken while travelling across the North Island.
The active typography was observed, then captured with the interesting juxtaposition of clashing meanings and contexts through each situation that arose.
The exhibition sets out to show a range of relationships communities have with typography in their own environment through different contexts.
The images are intended to ask question of the viewer to relate the possible meaning for them to the active use of the typography.

BRUCE JARVIS- ROCK LEGENDS OPENS QUEENS BIRTHDAY

Denis Friar April 9th 2012

My approach to photography is to quietly reflect on my surroundings, human, built or natural and to try to understand what is going on. What forces are at work that produce what I am seeing? I try not to influence or manipulate in any way what is happening, but to make an image in a most revealing way, at the point where all the various factors converge. This is essentially a subconscious process as everything is often changing so quickly that there is not time to think about it logically or to have the benefit of pressing the “pause” button.  I am also a painter, so those characteristics of form, shape, tone, line, texture, composition and colour influence me. For many years I worked professionally with medium format cameras which were always on a tripod. This experience helped me develop a love of strong composition which I still use in this current more fluid approach.

ADELE HICKFORD - AN AERIAL WORLD- APRIL 6th

Art didn’t figure much in Adele’s life until quite recently. In just a few years she has progressed  from “not knowing much about art” to being accepted to exhibit at the NZ Art Show in 2011. Then she was placed runner-up in the photography category of the Emerging Artist’s Exhibition at Artrium Gallery Wellington, in 2011.
Adele is currently studying part time at the Learning Connexion in Wellington. During the last 4 years she has exhibited regularly at end-of-term student shows. Outside of these exhibitons Adele has sold photographs and commissioned drawings and paintings.
“I have a very eclectic approach to art - my enthusiasm for experimenting with drawing, painting and collage feed off and influence my photography.”
“Most of the photos in this selection of aerial abstracts were taken along the Hawkes Bay coastline. Aerial Photography is my favourite form of artistic expression, because I relish the challenge of looking at all that information before me and reducing it down to something that is both meaningful and distinctive.  I delight in capturing weird and wonderful shapes and patterns  from the air and presenting them in a way that encourages people to rethink what they see in front of them. ”
